Moondrop and the VDSF Response

This is for everyone who values measurements - Moondrop does as well! They are an audio research, R&D first company - their tuning target is core to what they do.

This VDSF (Virtual Diffuse Sound Field) Target Response is the brand's proprietary tuning philosophy, designed to replicate the natural acoustics of a high-end speaker system within a treated room. Unlike the standard consumer "V-shaped" sound, VDSF is based on the Head-Related Transfer Function (HRTF) of professional B&K HATS (Head and Torso Simulators) in a diffusion field.

In simpler terms, it aims for a "transparent" and "open" soundstage where instruments and vocals occupy their own distinct space without being muffled or artificially boosted. For the listener, this means a neutral, high-resolution signature with a clear upper-midrange (for vocal clarity) and a controlled bass response that remains punchy without bleeding into the other frequencies.

In audio the 'Harman Target' is often referenced, thanks to the excellent research they have completed. VDSF is Moondrop’s refined in house take on this type of research, similar in concept but different in execution - focusing more on soundstage depth and timbre accuracy.
